Megan Sugden Photography is based out of Hallock, Minnesota and was established in 2005, but my interest in photography started years before at the age of sixteen when I received my very first camera. Once it was in my hands, it never left! I have always loved taking pictures, and I still remember the good ol’ days of sending film off in the mail and waiting for the prints to return. Eventually I started developing my own negatives, spending countless hours in the darkroom and printing my own photos.
I spent my college years studying photojournalism and graphic design at Minnesota State University Moorhead, soaking up everything I possibly could about photography. I also spent a year at Northern Arizona University, learning from amazing professors and furthering my education with advanced classes and access to the latest equipment. (Not to mention taking in the gorgeous scenery of the mountains and the Grand Canyon!)
I graduated from MSUM in 2004, switched from film to my first digital SLR, worked in freelance for a year, and officially launched Megan Sugden Photography in 2005. By the summer of 2007, I was able to resign from my day job and focus on my photography full time… which, for me, was a dream come true! I now have over ten years of experience photographing hundreds of portraits and weddings.
I also enjoy photographing the night sky and chasing the Northern Lights. I created a second website of my work called Kittson County Skies and you can view more of that work and purchase prints at my other website, www.kittsoncountyskies.com.
I’m married to my husband, Nathan, who farms and runs a custom harvesting business (www.sugdenharvesting.com) and we are busy raising our our three boys Wesley (6), Jasper (4), and Charlie (2).
About the studio...
Sugden Farm, located about a mile north of Hallock, is home to my "outdoor studio" and I photograph the majority of my summer and fall sessions within the 80 acres of trails and woods on our property. When we shoot here, you will have access to all my props, including a colorful array of chairs, several rustic tree swings, a tire swing, and even a century-old barn. Clients enjoy the benefit of a beautiful outdoor location with all of the amenities conveniently in one place. I also am available for on-location sessions and am happy to travel to your home.
In the winter, I photograph mainly children and newborns at my indoor studio, just a mile outside of Hallock. It was our home before we built our new house, so not only is it a comfortable and cozy place to hold photo sessions, it also conveniently includes a full kitchen, laundry, a large bathroom and dressing room, and even a TV and closet full of toys to keep older siblings busy when they tag along to newborn sessions!
About my style...
As you can clearly see, my style is bright, colorful, vibrant, and most of all, FUN! My photos capture kids, families, couples, and seniors just as they are, right at this moment of their lives. When you look back on the photographs further down the road, you will immediately be brought back to that very moment and smile. I love candid shots, but at the same time, I understand the need to have timeless portraits and strive to capture natural, classic poses that don’t always have to look posed.
And though I favor shooting in natural light as much as possible, I am also experienced with professional lighting and flash, and can work in any lighting situation! (I know how challenging the lighting can be in many wedding and reception venues). I love old antique chairs, open picture frames, lollipops and bubbles. I prefer an unmowed lot full of weeds over a manicured lawn, and sometimes people think I’m crazy but I’ll go just about anywhere to get that perfect shot. Don’t be afraid to get messy! Anything is possible, and we’re going to have a lot of FUN together!

My years of education and experience are only half the equation; what completes it is my passion. I have absolutely loved getting to meet brand-new clients, as well as getting to know repeat clients over the years. Through my lens, I’ve gotten to watch families grow, and kids grow up. I love knowing that photographs I’ve taken are hanging in homes all over. It’s overwhelmingly wonderful to know that I’ve been able to preserve important seasons in my client’s lives, and I couldn’t be more grateful for each and every one of them. This year, Megan Sugden Photography celebrates ten years of capturing memories, and I couldn’t feel more privileged or excited for all that’s to come. Whether I’m capturing the bride and groom’s first kiss, a sleepy little newborn yawn, a family’s shared giggle, or a sweet moment between siblings, I combine my years of education with my years of experience to create a fun, memorable session for you that results in beautiful, personality-filled pictures.
